Contemporary praise and worship music has over recent years come of age, at least locally, with gospel songs enjoying massive airplay almost at par with secular music. It is no longer surprising to find revellers jamming along to popular, funky and urban-driven homegrown gospel tunes in even out-of-way pubs or nightspots.

Regular new releases are riding a popularity wave pegged on varied influences, ranging from catchy hip-hop, r&b beats to distinctly spiritual and dancehall/reggae rhythms. Subsequently, the number of local artistes inclined to recording contemporary Christian music (CCM) has notably also flourished.

Gone are the days when singers like Mary Atieno Ominde, Wangechi Mbogo, Zipporah Muoso, Nancy Torome, Faith Kithele, Naomi Nyongesa, Catherine Mweni, Rose Jeffa, Faustin Minishi among others - dominated gospel music charts.

A cross section of especially younger musicians, are seemingly taking on the baton from popular names Mary Wambui, Henrie Mutuku, Esther Wahome, Krystin Ndela, S.K. Blue, Lillian Mwaka, Roselyn Alouch, Nkatha, David Keen Zziwa, and Mary Githinji.

The list of winners at the Groove Awards 2015 event staged on June 6th at Safaricom Stadium Indoor Gymnasium, situated on Nairobi city's fringes, reflects an emerging crop of gospel musicians, eager to curve their niche in an increasingly competitive scene.
