In the age of digitalization, almost everyone with access to a smart-phone takes photos with relative
ease. Nonetheless, there is an indisputable magical element about skillful photographers' ability to
capture eye-catching images, which stand out compared to the digital-era 'selfies'. Learning to use
a professional camera entails building upon experience and practice - a feat which ultimately 'makes
perfect'. One of Kenya's accomplished freelance photographers, Gilbert Otieno - has invested in
years of hard work. His professionalism nurtured for more than a decade, earns him a constant flow
of high-end clientele and assignments.
- - July 2015 - the US Embassy Kenya/Department of State commissioned him to cover President
Barack Obama's visit to Kenya.
- - He was also assigned to document US Secretary of State John Kerry's earlier visit in April 2015.
- - The Attorney General's Chambers/State Law Office contracted Otieno to take photos for use
on their official website.
- - Other notable commissions' undertaken are previous visits by US Secretaries of State including
Hillary Clinton and Madeleine Albright among others.
- - In 2006, he took photos of South African freedom struggle icon the late Nelson Mandela while
visiting Kenya.
- - Otieno has several instances also been called upon to capture moments of various international
and regional Heads of State visits to Kenya.
- - His services were enlisted for the National Conference on Health Leadership, Management &
Governance [2013] and Africa Surging Forward Conference [2013].
- - Otieno's photos featured in KENGEN company's 2013 and 2014 official Calenders.
- - The Kenya Institute of Mass Communication graduate has had working stints with the formerly
Kenya Times Media Trust, Nation Newspapers Group, Kenya Broadcasting Corporation [KBC]
and Kenya Television Network [KTN].
